Investment Tips & Tricks

SEE Finance has some not too obvious features available for use with investment tracking.

Manually Updating Current & Historical Investment Quotes
For securities not listed on Yahoo! Finance or ones you just wish to update their quotes manually you can set their current market value manually. Check out the instructions on how to do so on the Updating Investment Quotes Page. You can also manually enter and edit or import their historical quotes from CSV or QIF files. Check out the instructions on how to do so on the Editing & Importing Historical Investment Quotes Page.

Untracked sources/destinations of funds for investment transactions
If you are not tracking the funds used in investment specific transactions You can set an investment specific transaction to have the category of the same account the transaction is in (the account's name in brackets) to prevent a change in the investment accounts balance. This is useful for single mutual fund accounts where there is never a cash balance and other investment accounts where the funds used in investment transactions come from an untracked source such as an employer.

Keyboard Shortcuts
In the "Edit" view of investment accounts you can switch between the "General Info" and "Security Info" views by using "Command [" and "Command ]" keyboard shortcuts. You can update quotes using the "Control Shift Q" keyboard shortcut. There are many other keyboard shortcuts in SEE Finance making entry, editing and view navigation quick and easy.

Transaction Ordering
In SEE Finance you can set transaction dates down to the second so even if they are entered, downloaded, or imported with inappropriate dates you can set the transaction's date to appropriately reflect when the transaction occurred to ensure proper ordering of the transactions. For use when the default ordering of credits first and debits second is not accurate.

Transaction Filters
Transaction Filters make transaction entry and editing quick and easy. For example, you can simply setup a filter to look for a specific payee name and if it finds a match, when run on selected transactions, it will set the found transaction to have the details set for this particular filter. You can also use filters to edit transactions based on any combination of payee, type, memo, category, security type, security name, symbol, or CUSIP as you desire. You can even set the filter to split found transactions to have specific details and amounts. With transaction filters the possibilities are endless.

Additional Graph Options
Also, many of the graphs in SEE Finance have menus associated with them that when you Control click a graph (control + click) a menu appears that allows you to change the graph to another type or setting.

Hidden Table Columns
In the security list and position tables you can Control click the table to display the table's contextual menu with selections for setting the optional columns and column sorting.

Investment Position Printing/Exporting
Investment positions can be printed or exported to CSV files. when printing or exporting to CSV files the position listings are WYSIWYG based on the columns shown in the table of positions. To print the investment positions select "Print" from the File menu. To export the positions to a CSV file, Control click the positions table and select "Export Positions to CSV". Note that when printing or exporting investment position if you have one of the individual investment positions expanded to show the changes in the position then the generated printout/CSV file will list every position's list of changes.  If all of the individual investment positions are collapsed showing only the overall listing for the positions then only the overall position information is in the generated printout/CSV file.  You can quickly expand/collapse all using the keyboard shortcuts "command right arrow" and "command left arrow" respectively.

Preferences
We have included many other different options in the Investment Preferences for your customization. You can set the account list to show just the cash balance of the investment account or the total market value of plus the cash balance. You can set to manually or automatically update investment quotes when the file is loaded. You can also set whether quotes are shown in the account currency or in the security's native currency. There are also several Color Preferences you can set in regards to investments. You can set positions and securities row highlight and background colors based on gain/loss and you can also set the colors used for the investment "Composition" and "Sector Exposure" pie charts.
