SEE Finance FAQ

Tips & Tricks

SEE Finance has some not too obvious features you may have not discovered yet. Check out some of them below:

Hidden Table Columns
One of the not too obvious features is the hidden table columns options. In the "Transactions List View" there is a little triangle in the top right corner, which when clicked brings up a menu of all the table columns that can be hidden or shown by selecting them from the menu (this feature is also available in the investment position tables). You can also right click on any of the column headers to pull up this menu to show/hide columns. Note that the right clicking of column headers to expose additional column options also applies to many of Apple's own applications.

Mouse Free Transaction Entry
Transaction entry and editing is capable of being 100% mouse free. You can select accounts by scrolling through the list by using the arrow keys. You can select an account's different views by using the corresponding keyboard shortcuts found in the "View" menu. You can open and close the the edit view by using a keyboard shortcut ("Command+4"). You can also open and close the the graph view by using a keyboard shortcut ("Command+5"). You can then tab between all the accounts, the transactions table, edit fields and search field. You can create, delete, and split transactions using the corresponding keyboard shortcuts found in the "Transactions" menu. To switch back to the transactions table quickly use the appropriate keyboard shortcut for the type of table being used ("Command+1" for the "List" view and "Command+2" for "Icon" view). For any alert or warning window that appears use can use the return key for the default selection in blue, for removing items the delete key will select the appropriate button, and for other actions the first letter of the action can be used to select the appropriate button.

Bulk Transaction Editing
You can only edit up to 10 transactions at a time in the "Edit" view of an account. However, you can edit any number of transactions using the "Transactions" menu or the transactions contextual menu (shown by right clicking a transactions table) and also by using transaction filters. In the "Transactions" menu or the transactions contextual menu you can change the payee, type category or reconciled status of any number of transactions. You can also clear out the values for payee, type, category, memo transaction number, check number or reconciled status of any number of transactions. With transaction filters you can setup a filter to look for certain transactions based on constraints you create and set the value(s) of transactions matching these constraints to the value(s) of the filter's selected action. You can learn more about creating transaction filters in SEE Finance's help files.

Transaction Editing Locking
You can choose to turn on or off transaction editing locking in the Transaction Preferences. With transaction editing locking turned you are required to first unlock a transaction before you can edit it in the "Edit" view and you can unlock and lock transactions using the "Command Shift E" keyboard shortcut.

Memorized Transactions
In SEE Finance you can setup transaction payees with default values for transaction type, category, memo and amount. With Memorized Transactions turned on when you change the payee of a transaction it will update the transaction with the default transaction type, category, memo, and amount set for the payee in the "Payees" list. You can also set whether or not editing transaction's transaction type, category, memo, and amount automatically updates the selected payee's default values for transaction type, category, memo, and amount. You can turn the memorized transactions feature on or off and whether or not it automatically updates payees with default values in Transaction Preferences.

Keyboard Shortcuts
There are many other keyboard shortcuts in SEE Finance making entry, editing and view navigation quick and easy. You check out the keyboard shortcuts for different actions in the application's menus. For example, "Command N" creates a new item and "Command D" deletes an item based on the selected view you are in. If you have transaction editing locking turned on you can unlock and lock transactions using the "Command Shift E" keyboard shortcut. In transaction "Edit" views the calendar date popup button responds to the "Option Shift D" keyboard shortcut.

Contextual Menus
Most tables in SEE Finance have contextual menus accessed by right clicking tables. For transaction tables it is a menu of actions similar to the application's "Transactions" menu. Statement tables have a menu allowing access to statement images.

Transaction Filters
Transaction Filters make transaction entry and editing quick and easy. For example, you can simply setup a filter to look for a specific payee name and if it finds a match, when run on selected transactions, it will set the found transaction to have the details set for this particular filter. You can also use filters to edit transactions based on category, type, memo or any combination of payee, type, memo or category you desire. You can even set the filter to split found transactions to have specific details and amounts. With transaction filters the possibilities are endless.

Currency Formatters
SEE Finance comes with multiple currencies setup for your use. When these currencies are in use throughout the program they are shown with their default currency symbol (for example the dollar sign in "$10.00"). Sometimes users may desire not to see this symbol to save screen space or perhaps the symbol used is not the one you want to use (for example Australian dollar and the Canadian dollar are shown with C$ and AU$). In the currencies preferences for the application you can set whether or not the full currency formatters are shown in accounts and you can even customize the symbol for each formatter.

Additional Graph Options
Also, many of the graphs in SEE Finance have menus associated with them that when you right click a graph (control + click) a menu appears that allows you to change the graph to another type or setting.

Transaction Ordering
In SEE Finance you can set transaction dates down to the second so even if they are entered, downloaded, or imported with inappropriate dates you can set the transaction's date to appropriately reflect when the transaction occurred to ensure proper ordering of the transactions. For use when the default ordering of credits first and debits second is not accurate.

Space Bar Check Box Toggling
Many tables in SEE Finance have check boxes for the items in the table. You can use the space bar to toggle the these check boxes on and off.

Database Vacuuming
If you have made many deletions from the file, especially changes in transaction or statement images, you can choose to vacuum the database to decrease the file's size. To vacuum the database select "File" and then "Database" and then "Vacuum Database".

More and More Options
We have included many different options in the SEE Finance's Preferences for your customization. You can customize many colors, fonts, table sizes, images, currencies and much more. You can even have some fun with transition effects, which change how views are switched out. There are many different ways you can customize SEE Finance just for you. So check out all these preferences when you get a chance.
