Tips & Tricks
SEE Finance has some not too obvious features available for use.
Optional Table Columns
Optional Table Columns
One of which is the optional table columns
feature. The "Transactions List View" tables have optional columns that can be shown
or hidden. You can Control click the table to display the table's contextual menu with selections for setting the optional columns
and column sorting (this feature is also available in many other tables throughout the program).
Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard Shortcuts
There are many Keyboard Shortcuts in SEE Finance making entry, editing and
view navigation quick and easy. You check out the keyboard shortcuts for different actions on the
Keyboard Shortcuts Help Page, in the application's menus or in a separate reference window in the program
accessed by selecting "SEE Finance Keyboard Shortcuts" from the Help menu. For example, "Command N" creates a new item
and "Command D" deletes an item based on the selected view you are in. If you have transaction editing locking turned on you can
unlock and lock transactions using the "Command Shift E" keyboard shortcut. In the Transactions Edit View the calendar date pop-up window
can be opened using the "C" or "D" keyboard shortcut when the date selector is selected. There are also many keyboard shortcuts for entering
dates.
Mouse Free Transaction Entry
Mouse Free Transaction Entry
Transaction entry and editing is capable of being 100% mouse free using Keyboard Shortcuts.
You can select accounts by scrolling through the list by using the arrow keys. You can select an account's different views by using the
corresponding Keyboard Shortcuts found in the "View" menu. You can open and close the the
Transactions Edit View by using a keyboard shortcut ("Command 4"). You can also open and close the the Transactions Graph View by using a keyboard shortcut ("Command 5").
You can then tab between all the accounts, the transactions table, edit fields and search field. You can enter subcategories by simply typing the first letter of the parent category and the subcategory with a dash ("-") in between (example: type "a-f" to select the "Auto - Fuel" subcategory). Note that you can even customize the tab order
of transaction editing fields by selecting "Edit Tab Order of Transaction Fields" from the "Transactions" menu. You can create, delete,
and split transactions using the corresponding Keyboard Shortcuts found in the "Transactions"
menu. To switch back to the transactions table quickly use the appropriate keyboard shortcut for the type of table being used ("Command 1"
for the Transactions List View and "Command 2" for Transactions Icon View). To change the transaction selection when the transactions table is not selected you
can use "Command Up" and "Command Down". If you have transaction editing locking turned on you can unlock and lock transactions using the
"Command Shift E" keyboard shortcut. For any alert or warning window that appears use can use the return key for the default selection in
blue, for removing items the delete key will select the appropriate button, and for other actions the first letter of the action can be used
to select the appropriate button.
Bulk Transaction Editing
Bulk Transaction Editing
You can only edit up to 10 transactions at a time in the Transactions Edit View of an account. However, you can edit any number of
transactions using the "Transactions" menu or the transactions contextual menu (shown by Control clicking a transactions table)
and also by using transaction filters. In the "Transactions" menu or the transactions contextual menu you can change the
payee, type category or reconciled status of any number of transactions. You can also clear out the values for payee, type,
category, memo transaction number, check number or reconciled status of any number of transactions. Using column sorting and/or
transaction searches can help easily find and select desired transactions to edit in bulk. With transaction filters
you can setup a filter to look for certain transactions based on constraints you create and set the value(s) of transactions
matching these constraints to the value(s) of the filter's selected action. To learn more about
Creating Transaction Filters Click Here.
Transaction Searches
Transaction Searches
While in an account you can search transactions based on payee, transaction type, category, memo, security and/or amount by entering a value in the bottom right search field. When you enter a value in the search field a light blue search criteria bar appears at the top of the window indicating the fields selected for the search (Payee, Type, Category, Memo, Security, Amount). You can also use the account's "Start" and "End" dates below the transactions table to narrow down transactions by date. During searches the regular "Balance" listing under table of transactions becomes the "Search Total" for the transactions from the search. Searches are also printable by selecting "Print" from the file menu and selecting to print "Show Transactions".
Transaction Editing Locking
Transaction Editing Locking
You can choose to turn on or off transaction editing locking in the
Transaction Preferences. With transaction editing locking turned on you
are required to first unlock a transaction before you can edit it in the Transactions Edit View and you can unlock and lock transactions
using the "Command Shift E" keyboard shortcut.
Transaction Ordering
Transaction Ordering
In SEE Finance you can set transaction dates down to the second so even if they are entered, downloaded, or imported
with inaccurate dates and times you can set the transaction's date to appropriately reflect when the transaction occurred to ensure proper
ordering of the transactions. You can also choose to have same date and time transactions to be ordered based on first entered or have
them be ordered based on using credits first and debits second in the
Transaction Preferences.
Amount Pop-Up Calculators
Amount Pop-Up Calculators
In amount fields throughout SEE Finance you can take advantage of pop-up calculators to quickly calculate needed values.
Amount pop-up calculators are activated by entering "=" in the desired amount field and they keep a running tab of entered values. You can
accept the calculated value by entering "=" again or by pressing return. To cancel the calculation hit the escape key or press "Command W".
For some more information about entering values in the pop-up calculators check out
Keyboard Shortcuts.
Transaction Editing Tab Order
Transaction Editing Tab Order
In SEE Finance you can choose to override the default tab order of the transaction editing fields for
each account type by selecting "Edit Tab Order of Transaction Fields" from the "Transactions" menu. For some users every field is regularly
needed, but for others the transaction number, check number and/or other fields is rarely used and removing them from the
regular tab order can speed up transaction entry.
Space Bar Check Box Toggling

Many tables in SEE Finance have check boxes for the items in the table. You can use the space bar to toggle
the these check boxes on and off.

Memorized Transactions
Memorized Transactions
In SEE Finance you can setup transaction payees with default values for transaction type, category, memo and amount.
With Memorized Transactions
turned on when you change the payee of a transaction it will update the transaction with the default
transaction type, category, memo, and amount set for the payee in the "Payees" list. You can also set whether or not editing
transaction's transaction type, category, memo, and amount automatically updates the selected payee's default values for transaction
type, category, memo, and amount. You can turn the memorized transactions feature on or off and whether or not it automatically
updates payees with default values in Transaction Preferences.
Contextual Menus
Contextual Menus
Most tables in SEE Finance have contextual menus accessed by Control clicking tables. For transaction tables it is a
menu of actions similar to the application's "Transactions" menu. Statement tables have a menu allowing access to statement images.
Transaction Filters
Transaction Filters
Transaction Filters make transaction entry and editing quick and easy. For
example, you can simply setup a filter to look for a specific payee name and if it finds a match, when run on selected transactions,
it will set the found transaction to have the details set for this particular filter. You can also use filters to edit transactions based
on any combination of payee, type, memo, category, security type, security name, security symbol, or CUSIP as you desire.
You can even set the filter to split found transactions to have specific details and amounts. With transaction filters the
possibilities are endless.
Currency Formatters
Currency Formatters
SEE Finance comes with multiple currencies setup for your use. When these currencies are in use throughout the
program they are shown with their default currency symbol (for example the dollar sign in "$10.00"). Sometimes users may desire not
to see this symbol to save screen space or perhaps the symbol used is not the one you want to use (for example Australian dollar and
the Canadian dollar are shown with C$ and AU$). In the Currency Preferences
for the application you can set whether or not the full currency formatters are shown in accounts and you can even customize the
symbol for each formatter. You can set a preference for having negative amounts shown in parentheses. You can also set a preference for not having to enter the decimal symbol while entering amounts.
Additional Graph Options
Additional Graph Options
Also, many of the graphs in SEE Finance have menus associated with them that when you Control click a graph
(control + click) a menu appears that allows you to change the graph to another type or setting.

the database to decrease the file's size. To vacuum the database select "File" and then "Database" and then "Vacuum Database".
More and More Options
More and More Options
We have included many different options in the Preferences for your customization.
You can customize many colors, fonts, table sizes, images, currencies and much more. You can even have some fun with transition
effects, which change how views are switched out. There are many different ways you can customize SEE Finance
just for you. So check out all these preferences when you get a chance.
Help Online
These exact same Help Files are online here. Sometimes viewing these Help files in the system's built in browser is
not easy to use due to screen space. Being able to view these help files online in a browser window and being able to switch back
and forth may be more preferable (Command Tab to switch back and forth). You can also visit the
SEE Finance Support Page for any additional help you
might need.
