Auto-Categorizing Transactions

In SEE Finance there's two options for automatically categorizing transactions:Transaction Filters and Memorized Transactions.

Transaction Filters
For users who usually download or import transactions then we recommend to using the program's Transaction Filters feature to automatically categorize common transactions and possibly make other adjustments for you.  You can use transaction filters to look for certain values in transactions and replace that value or other values as desired.  There's a few examples of simple transaction filters on the Creating Transaction Filters Help Page.  So for example, you could setup a filter to look for the payee name (the constraint) and have the filter's action to just have the desired Category.  Then when this filter is run on transactions if any transaction has the payee set in the filter it would change the Category as desired and leave all other values alone.  You can run transaction filters on any selected transaction(s) in an account, during imports, and on all transactions in all accounts.  Transaction filters can be really simple like the previous example or really complex.  There's also a "Create Filter from Selected Transaction" option in the Transactions menu that you can use to create a transaction filter quickly from a common transaction based on its payee.

Memorized Transactions
If you regularly enter transactions manually then the program will remember default information for payees referred to as Memorized Transactions.  After you manually enter or edit a payee for a transaction then the program will remember the values set for the transaction and use this information as the payee's default information (category, transaction type, memo, amount).  Selecting this payee in the future while for another transaction will autofill the payee's default information for category, transaction type, memo and amount.  You can also view/edit your payee's default information by selecting "Payees, Types & Categories" from the Account List, then selecting "Payees" from the top bar.  In the program's Transaction Preferences there's the preference to have the program learn the default payee information as you enter new transactions or you can manually setup the payee's default values.
