Taxable Stock Spinoff Information:

You will be responsible for the taxes of that transaction in the year that the spin-off occurred. You need to record a "Return of Capital" transaction on the spinoff date for the percentage of the investment in the original stock that is now invested in the new stock. Then you to record the a "Buy" transaction on the spinoff date for the new stock.

Taxable Stock Spinoff Example:

On 1/1/1995 you bought 100 shares of AT&T for $10.00. On 1/1/98 there is a spin-off of Lucent Technologies and 85% of the original basis of AT&T is retained and the other 15% is used to purchase your shares of Lucent. You now get 1/2 share for every share of AT&T you own. The following two transactions should be entered:


Non-Taxable Stock Spinoff Information:

Your holding period should match the purchase dates of the original buys. You need to record a "Return of Capital" transaction for the percentage of the investment in the original stock that is now invested in the new stock. Then you to record the a "Buy" transaction for the new stock on the same date(s) as the previous purchase(s) of the origin stock.
